July 2022 Newsletter

Hello, and welcome to Effective Altruism Bristol's mostly-monthly newsletter. We've got a lot to cover in this but the most important thing that you can help us with is to respond to our retreat happening in September. More details below

We've been reading this month about how criticizing effective altruism is important - as the movement grows, it's vital to make sure that the ideas and assumptions behind key decisions can hold up to scrutiny or can be changed if there are better ways to do things. Critiquing EA is also a popular pastime for most people involved in the community, with critical forum posts often being the most upvoted and discussed.

With that in mind, Lizka Vaintrob, Fin Moorhouse and Joshua Teperowski Monrad have launched an EA Criticism and Red Teaming contest with $100,000 in prizes. Entries can be in a range of subject matters/formats and also from people who see themselves as outside of the movement, the deadline is 1st September.

In a wonderfully meta point, there has already been criticism of how this competition has been announced.

EA Retreat

You might have heard mutterings from various quarters (including the introduction of this email) that EA Bristol is having a retreat - we are!

It'll be 23rd-25th September (Friday-Sunday) at a countryside location in Devon. We have some ideas for workshops (suggestions welcome) and will have morning and afternoon working/writing sessions. There will be socialising in the evenings, and some time spent seeing the surrounding area. Rough schedule can be found here.

The intention is that this will be largely or entirely subsidised - depending to what extent, individual costs are likely to be no higher than £50. We will probably have at least 2 cars going down but public transport may be required for some attendees.

If you want to attend please let us know (email, WhatsApp or in the linked document) - we will be collecting a returned £20 deposit at the end of July if you have signed up - if you're feeling very eager please send your deposit now on this link. Please make sure we have your name or email address. Finally, please let us know any questions or suggestions you have for this.

Recent Events

We had a great time in the water taxi in June, after a few false starts. Ended with coffee and a brief tour of the main landmarks for the Colston statue story:

We also had our monthly Chat and Plan (formerly Stratcom) recently, where we discussed having future dancing and / or drama improv sessions, along with plans for the future retreat:

Finally, we recently had a mid week social in Queen Square for some drinks and silliness:
